Mamertine Prison is the oldest prison in Rome, for many centuries a maximum security prison for enemies of Rome awaiting execution. It is the place where, according to tradition, the Apostles Peter and Paul lived their last days before being martyred. The position of this prison was strategic: placed at the foot of the Capitoline Hill and in front of the Forum, the center of public life, it was a clear warning symbol of the implacable justice of Rome against its enemies.

Free admission, without waiting in line, is provided for all visitors with disabilities who have a certificate attesting to a disability of more than 74%.
