This bridge, of ancient construction, crosses the river Arno in its narrowest passage in the city and is unique in the world for its special conformation. The numerous shops that populate it were once home to the butchers and greengrocers of the city. Following the inauguration of the Vasari Corridor, located right next to the bridge, these shops were however defined as 'inappropriate' for the place.
For this reason, from the middle of 1500 until today, they welcome some of the most prestigious Florentine goldsmiths and jewelers. History tells that, the beauty of this bridge, even brought him luck: Ponte Vecchio was in fact the only Florentine bridge to be spared by Hitler in the bombings of 1944.
hideThe immense complex of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, or 'Duomo' as the Florentines call it, is today one of the most visited and frequented places in Florence. If we look up at his feet and look up at the sky, we will certainly notice the sensational dome above him.
The latter is the famous self-supporting dome created by Filippo Brunelleschi. This dome, 117 meters high, was immediately the largest dome in the world, until then held by the dome of the Pantheon. Access to the top of the dome by climbing 463 steps.
